I’ve followed @thedefineddish on Instagram for years and just this morning, while doing the aimless “I should be doing something productive but instead I’m going to watch a million Insta-stories” scroll, I was delighted to see her receiving IV therapy from a clinic near her home in Dallas. Now, before you assume that she was hungover (it was her birthday weekend after all) take a beat. A few years ago you could safely make that assumption since everyone from the housewives to your roommate was hooking up to an IV after a weekend on Rainey St. but these days, IV therapy means so much more. Today, people across the world are using IV therapy to treat vitamin deficiencies, increase energy levels, sleep better, and even improve their mental focus. Don’t get me wrong, they’re still using it to rehydrate after an exceptionally fun evening but for the most part, IV therapy has become the go-to for those of us looking to optimize our health from the inside out.
Quite a turn, right?!
And guess what? That’s exactly what @thedefineddish was doing. She mentioned in her following stories that she has been getting IV therapy regularly to treat some deficiencies her primary care physician noticed after a routine blood panel. And before you say something along the lines of “can’t you just take an oral supplement?” I want to remind you that the absorption rate of vitamins is both higher and quicker when administered intravenously. I know you have to love that. I can’t even see your packed schedule and I know your eyes lit up at that.
But that’s what has been really catching my eye these days: the prevalence of IV therapy. Previously relegated to tv shows chronicling the rich and famous, it is now a regular component of people’s self-care routine. I see it budgeted into monthly healthcare spending, set up as part of girl’s nights, and even coupled with workout classes to improve recovery. The IV has left the partygoers and landed in the laps of everyone looking to feel better and ultimately live longer.
And who doesn’t want that?
So who is feeling the benefits of a visit to an IV therapy clinic? You see its popularity across the nation from Madonna to John Legend to Cindy Crawford. Just a few months ago even Rihanna tweeted a photo of herself getting an immunity booster IV to help her maintain her packed schedule. Joe Rogan, podcaster and former UFC fighter, even hosted Professor David Sinclair, Ph.D., from the Harvard Medical School who specializes in genetics and anti-aging to discuss the benefits of NAD+, a noted regenerative IV treatment known for its ability to repair DNA and combat aging. And based on that conversation alone, Rogan began getting regular NAD+ drips and was recently recorded as saying, “It feels like the second one (NAD+ drip) really took it over the top. I have more energy; I feel really vibrant. I feel great!”
So if a guy who works out six days a week and eats as healthy as humanly possible is feeling the benefits, can you imagine what it can do for us mere mortals? The idea that it has improved his already healthy lifestyle is beyond promising. The notion that we have access to products that may slow down the aging process while improving our quality of life isn’t something we wish for, it’s here and accessible. In fact, author and biohacker Dave Asprey has written all about the benefits of NAD+ (his favorite IV therapy) in his New York Times bestselling book about antiaging, Super Human. His strong assertions that we can heal our bodies from within is informing a new generation of people that the status quo doesn’t have to be. Yes, you can work out and eat healthy, but we can truly be treating our bodies from the inside out in ways that can improve our lives exponentially.
So where do we go from here? If you look at the speed with which IV therapy has changed (and most importantly, improved), we can only expect better things to come. In the never-ending fight to stay heathy and live the longest, scientists and popular cultural figures are teaming up to spread the best news we didn’t know we needed: You have the ability (and the science) to improve your quality of life.
And it’s just an IV away.
